NIAGARA FALLS — More than 700 snowmobile enthusiasts from across the state are gathering here this weekend for a three-day convention focused on safety and building interest in the sport. The New York State Snowmobile Association, which has 255 member clubs and represents more than 60,000 families of riders, held a series of seminars Saturday as part of the event at the Conference Center Niagara Falls. Officials believe by helping the activity become more family oriented, they can attract more interest as well as raise awareness about the need for careful operation of the fast, heavy — and dangerous — sleds. “We’re always looking for ways to promote safety,” said Gary J. Broderick, the association’s vice president and member of the Shawnee Sno Chiefs, a Niagara County snowmobile club with 708 registered families.
Though popular in Niagara County, snowmobiling is huge in Erie County, which has the most registered members of any county in the state, and in recent years has been at or near the top in the number of member clubs in the organization, officials said.

Despite existing levels of local interest, the association and individual snowmobile clubs across the state still need more members to help adequately maintain trails, said Dave Perkins, the association’s trails coordinator. Often a small core of members takes responsibility for trail upkeep, and more support is needed, Perkins said. “It’s still up to the clubs,” he said. Jim and Vicki Swartout came to the convention from Schoharie County, which borders Albany County to the west, where they are members of the Summit Sno Riders. They’ve come to the event for six of the past seven years and have family members who have been riding snowmobiles for 40 years. The Swartouts said they agree there is a need for increased help from volunteers. “The more input you have from more families,” the more snowmobiling will flourish in the state, Jim Swartout said.
The statewide organization’s membership has skyrocketed in recent years, jumping to more than 60,000 from 27,000 just two years ago. There are about 11,500 miles of funded snowmobile trails in the state, 85 percent of which are on privately owned land. The association is headquartered in Long Lake, near the center of Adirondack Park. It held its 2007 convention in Rochester. Association officials estimate the economic impact of snowmobiling in the state to be between $750 million and $850 million annually. The event concludes today. abesecker@buffnews.com

The Colden Trail Riders Winter Picnic 08’.. was a great success. We had approximately 75 people stop in throughout the day. At one point we had over 42 sleds. Thanks to the groomers for working what snow we had for making the day enjoyable.
The trails were fair but the food and drink was great. Everyone brought something to be enjoyed, from Jambulaya, Italian Sausage, shrimp cocktail, homemade rigatoni with meatballs, sausage to homemade brownies and some great cheesecake. We had the old standby hot dogs and hamburgers everyone ate and rode with a full stomach.
A big thanks to Al and Kathryn Harding for opening up there home to us. Mellissa Armstrong for helping out and everyone for attending.
